SANCTUARY OF ZEUS

Sanctuary of Zeus from the Northwest in 1997

Like the open areas at other sites, the Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea contained many monuments. The most dominant feature in antiquity, and still today, was the Temple of Zeus. The Temple stood at the center of the sacred area much like the temple of Zeus at Olympia and of Apollo at Delphi. Surrounding the Temple were an Altar of Zeus, Sacred Grove of cypress trees, nine pavilions (Oikoi), kilns, hotel (Xenon), Bath house, houses and a Hero Shrine.
